Apiro Italy

Apiro was already inhabited during the Picentes and, later on, during the roman period and was also part of the Longobardic dukedom of Spoleto. In 1227 became county town of Valle di San Clemente jurisdiction, independent entity which would gather all the castles of the area. Afterwards became part of the Jesi domain and, after a short sovereignty of Francesco Sforza (1433-1434), under the papa jurisdiction until the Unification. Apiro is situated on a hill at 516 meters above the sea level, at the feet of s. Vicino Mount (m 1479) and has 2497 inhabitants. The old town, rich in works of art, is fortified by castle walls, while the surrounding territory has a considerable environmental charm. Despite being apparently decentralized, the town is well connected by roads and public services, and all the biggest towns of the regain are very close: Jesi is 25 km far, Fabriano and Macerate are 45 km far and Ancona, the regional capital, is 63 km far from Apiro.
